Educational Activities

Rapp at Home provides a wide range of educational activities. Our Friends want to continue to learn – they want to learn more about things they already have some knowledge of, and they want to learn about completely new things that interest them. We are fortunate in Rappahannock County to have so many experts across a wide range of subjects who are willing to share their academic knowledge, experiences from their working lives, or their own recently gained knowledge.

Some of the educational activities we provide are simply visits to museums (often with a docent guiding us) or guided talks at facilities such as Blandy Experimental Farm. Frequently, we invite local experts who have discussed topics such as:

  • Weather forecasting
  • Watercolor painting demonstration
  • Life in the Foreign Service
  • What it's like to be a press secretary
  • Poisonous and venomous animals
  • Presentation by an expert on Ukraine
  • Fun with Fungi
  • Invasive plants
  • Being a Peace Corps volunteer
  • Learning to play a ukelele
  • Growing up during World War II
  • Vietnam experiences
  • More effective use of electronic devices

In addition, opportunities for gaining knowledge are provided by trips to local farms or other venues for discussions and viewing. These visits have included:

  • A local sheep farm
  • A local property where The Smithsonian has installed Kestrel boxes for research
  • A local farm that offers CSAs
  • The Rappahannock County Park for a birding session
  • A backyard chicken farm
  • The Smithsonian Conservation Center
  • The Sperryville Fire and Rescue station
  • The RappCats Adoption Center
