Recurring Activities

Do you want to learn or practice a new language, share your life story in a writing group, knit with like-minded folks, attend lectures on important topics, or attend a happy hour? These and other fun and informative activities are available to Rappahannock County older adults through Rapp at Home. Many of our community’s seniors seek a comfortable environment in which members of activity groups get to know each other and become friends.

Some of these groups are described below. All of these groups seek new participants and friendships. Call the Rapp at Home office (540-937-4663) if you'd like to try one of these groups. Or contact the group leader, also listed below.

Rappwriters

Writing can be lonely, but many writers find solace in the companionship of those who share their love of the written word. Share your writing with others and learn from gentle and positive critiques. Bring a work in progress or an old piece. Bring a few paragraphs, a poem, a book, or ideas you'd like to share. Watch your skills and techniques improve. Contact Deb at rappwriting@icloud.com.

Walk and Talk

Enjoy a gentle stroll with lots of talking and laughter. This group generally does a gentle walk around Little Washington, but sometimes, depending on the weather and the mood of the group, will take a longer stroll, perhaps ending with lunch or a drink - and of course more talking and laughter. Contact Nancy at nankona@aol.com.

French and Spanish Conversations

Each language group brings together speakers at different skill levels, from beginner to fluent. All are learners who listen, practice, and engage in the conversation to stretch their proficiency. Sometimes the subject is easy, such as discussing holiday experiences, families, or professions; sometimes the subject is challenging, such as artificial intelligence. But it's always invigorating and fun!

Stitch and Bitch

This group is great for all those unfinished projects in needle arts. To include knitting, crocheting, sewing, and quilting, in conversation with others who enjoy this relaxing time. Contact Victoria at victoria@rappathome.org.

Grief Support Group

This group shares their thoughts of recent or ongoing grieving with others who understand. They occasionally engage a professional grief counselor or outside speaker to guide them along. All discussions are confidential. Contact Grace at harley45@aol.com.

Conversations

This warmhearted group meets monthly to discuss topics of interest or concern to all (with the agreement that discussions of divisive politics are off limits). With gentle ease, the group usually begins each session with a specific topic - one that might be intriguing, or challenging, or joyful and/or reminiscent. If this group sometimes goes off topic, nobody minds since the main goal of this group is simply to get to know each other better. A few examples of previous topics include: Summertime and the living is…; My personal survival techniques; What advice my younger self would give me; Pleasant surprises about being my current age; What my favorite pet taught me; How I learned to ride a bike. Contact Danny at rapplander@gmail.com.

Life Stories

Members of this group write and share their own short stories of some interesting event that occurred during their childhood or adult life. Sometimes it's about them, a family member, or a friend. Sometimes the stories are funny, sometimes touching, but always interesting. What a great way to get to learn about other Friends. Contact Emery at emerylazar@gmail.com.
